Entries, halls and stairways: the walls you walk past every day

By the Editors · October 15, 2026

A front hall or a stairway wall gets seen by every guest and every family member, many times a day. Yet it is often the plainest wall in the house. Paneling and paint here change first impressions more than almost anything else of the same size.

What works on a foyer wall?

Vertical slats in a dark finish make a strong statement next to a glass front door, as in the entry pictured here. Picture-frame molding is the quieter option and suits more traditional homes.

How do you protect a busy hall wall?

Horizontal planks, like the hall pictured below, stretch a narrow space visually. Long halls also take knocks from bags, strollers and vacuum cleaners. Board and batten or raised panels on the lower part of the wall protect the drywall, and a higher-sheen paint on the trim wipes clean more easily than flat paint.

How should a pattern meet a stairway?

On a stair wall, the pattern should follow the slope of the stair rather than fight it. Plan the layout around the handrail brackets so trim and hardware do not collide.

How humid does it get near Venice?

On Manasota Key and Casey Key, entries open straight onto salt air and humid summers. Indoors, the U.S. EPA advises keeping relative humidity below 60 percent, ideally between 30 and 50 percent, to limit mold. Air-conditioned, dehumidified interiors are friendlier to wood and MDF trim; ask your installer which materials suit an entry that opens to the outdoors. If your home is on one of the Keys, ask whether it is in our area before planning.

NOAA does not publish a Venice station in its Comparative Climatic Data humidity table; the two nearest listed stations are Tampa and Fort Myers. Outdoor relative humidity there averages in the 80s at the morning reading in every month.
